1. Certified Financial Planner ®(CFP)
The CFP Designation is issued by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. To earn the credential, each candidate must have a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university and three years of full-time personal financial planning experience. In addition, candidates must take the CFP Certification examination and complete a CFP-board registered program or hold an accepted designation, degree or license. Every two years, a CFP practitioner must complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education. More information regarding the CFP designation can be found at www.cfp.net.
2. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®)
and Certification Mark (collectively, the "CFA marks") are professional certification marks granted in the United States and internationally by the CFA Institute. The Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®) charter is a globally respected, graduate-level investment credential established in 1962 and awarded by CFA Institute — the largest global association of investment professionals. There are currently more than 200,000 active CFA charter holders across more than 160 markets. To earn the CFA charter, candidates must: 1) pass three sequential, 4.5 hour examinations, alongside modules to build practical skills; 2) have at least three years of qualified professional investment experience; 3) join CFA Institute as members; and 4) commit to abide by, and annually reaffirm, their adherence to the CFA Institute Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct. 3. Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®)
The ChFC® is offered by The American College. To receive the ChFC® designation, you must successfully complete all courses in your selected program, meet experience requirements and ethics standards, and agree to comply with The American College Code of Ethics and Procedures. Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) designation is obtained by completing 6 core, 2 elective courses and a final exam for each course. As a prerequisite the IAR must have 3 years of full-time business experience within the 5 years preceding the awarding of the designation. This designation requires 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
4. Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
The CPA designation is obtained bypassing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and administered by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. Eligibility to sit for the exam typically requires a candidate to hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum number of qualifying hours in accounting and business administration, plus an additional one-year study. Additionally, candidates are required to have work experience in public accounting, with state-varying minimum requirements. Applicants for the CPA designation must also complete an exam on ethics, including state specific rules for professional accounting practice. The designation also requires continued education courses; requirements vary by state but usually require 120 hours every 3 years, with a minimum of 20 of these done each year. Many states also require ethics courses to be taken every renewal period, with a time range of 2-8 hours.
5. Personal Financial Specialist (PFS)
The Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential was established by the American Institute of CPAs who specialize in various areas of financial planning. In order to receive the credential, CPAs must complete an examination requirement that covers the entire planning process and professional responsibilities which make up personal financial planning, including estate, retirement, tax, investment, and insurance planning as well as specialized areas such as employee benefits, elder planning, and education. CPAs who also hold CFP or ChFC exams are not required to take the PFS exam, and are deemed to have met the requirement.
6. Whole Family Advisor Associate (WFAA)
The Whole Family Advisor Associate (WFAA) credential was established by the Legacy Capitals Academy for planners who specialize in multigenerational wealth planning. In order to receive the credential, and advisor must have two of these: a four year degree, two or more years of experience in the discipline, or have one of a list of certifications available here.
The Wealthtender Highly Rated Firm award is based on client feedback published online. To qualify, firms must have a client review rating of 4.75+ on a 1-5 scale over a minimum number of reviews published on Wealthtender within a defined timeframe for the award, and surpass a minimum number of award-eligible reviews based on a multiplier that takes into consideration the number of its financial advisors as reflected in its Form ADV. Eligible reviews are limited to clients (as of the review submission date) that advisors/firms must self-attest have no material conflicts of interest and received no compensation in exchange for their reviews.
