CPA - Certified Public Accountant
The CPA designation is obtained bypassing the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination set by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and administered by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy. Eligibility to sit for the exam typically requires a candidate to hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum number of qualifying hours in accounting and business administration, plus an additional one-year study. Additionally, candidates are required to have work experience in public accounting, with state-varying minimum requirements. Applicants for the CPA designation must also complete an exam on ethics, including state specific rules for professional accounting practice. The designation also requires continued education courses; requirements vary by state but usually require 120 hours every 3 years, with a minimum of 20 of these done each year. Many states also require ethics courses to be taken every renewal period, with a time range of 2-8 hours.
